Kids in the Streets - Again!

How many times have we read and heard these words? Normally, it related to some riot or unpleasantry in our cities. Not this time!

The kids who are in the streets since the Parkland nightmare are just what this country needs. These young adults are doing exactly what good American citizens are encouraged, invited, and expected to do when they have concerns about a wrong they see that isn’t being addressed. As a professional communication coach for many decades, I am very favorably impressed by three specific things:

1) The courage these young adults are showing in standing up for what they believe in, thereby embarrassing all of us who don’t do the same with issues we know need to be addressed.

2) The incredible adroitness and skill they are displaying in expressing their views. Their ability to speak clearly, concisely, passionately and with a deep determination is more than obvious.

It is refreshing and comforting to know that our democracy has these defenders in our midst. I would love to list them by name, but, I know I would miss someone. No matter, I have excitement about any of these young adults when they speak no matter how large, intimidating or challenging the setting is. How many of you reading this can same the same?

3) While the young adult leaders from Parkland are setting the bar high with their eloquence, I am deeply re-affirmed by the number of students and young adults around the country who show support by the courage they show in their own communities by walk outs and demonstrations and signs and t-shirts.

Young adults…..LEAD ON.
